In Bartow County, the county seat of Cassville no longer exists because the entire city was burned by Sherman's troops. The county was previously Cass County, named for Rev. War soldier who was staunchly Unionist. After 1st Manassas, the county changed its name to Bartow, after Gen. Francis Bartow, who died in that battle. The story is that Sherman purposefully destroyed Cassville because of the name change. First Baptist Church in Cartersville, now the county seat, was used as a stable for Sherman's horses and was badly damaged. In fact, in 1906 the church built a new brick building, seeded by monies received from the US govt as war damage reparations. I believe the people of Bartow did not think Sherman was more bark than bite!
