Jim, I reviewed the book recently, and what Bruce said in his note is correct. Anne points out that Sherman hoped that his armies would not be destructive but realized that he could not control their every action. His orders discouraged looting and pillaging, but Cump was smart enough to know that many soldiers would ignore those orders.
