The best reference for this event in North Georgia is "Joe Brown's Army -The Georgia State Line 1862-1865" by William Harris Bragg. This venture into North Georgia is noted on pages 20 thru 22. In the text you will find a comment about Major Winn being "of low character" and having problems in "the drinking line". I have never found any other reference for Samuel Winn being this way. By mid 1863 he was Lt. Colonel and commanded the 16th Georgia Cavlary till the end of the war. After the war he was a prominent citizen of Gwinnett County, Ga and served in the the Ga Senate 1873-1876. He also was mayor of Lawrenceville, Ga 1892-1894 and served as a County Court Judge.
