When the campaign began in May 1864, the battalion was divided among those who had horses and those who did not. Obviously the number of men available would vary from company to company. Dismounted men were transported to Virginia to serve as infantry until they could be remounted, which (if I recall correctly) happened after the return from Washington DC.
