You might be right, but Marler's situation late in the war is a bit of a mystery to me. Was Company E split so that part went with Early and part stayed...where? Would Haynie have been signing "commanding" if he were only in charge of a detachment? And after Haynie was captured, who was commanding what? So many questions unanswered.
Marler was the founder of E Company as an Independant Company of Partizan Rangers very early on. See OR, Series IV, volume 2, pp. 82-83.
"Wm L Marler was born 1828 and was a lawyer in Jefferson GA. Died “after 1860” . He was in 1878 as a practicing attorney in Gainesville GA and he's referred to as Col. W. L. Marler."
