Re: Burning of Barnesville, Reynolds Co.
Jack, I can't quit. We have to remember, most family stories after so many generations, don't include the exact date something happened. Unfortunately a fire burned most of the Morris family records some years ago. My Morris family had a hard time talking about the war due to the family being so divided. Some of the family seem to have been primarily northern in their sentiments. My greatgrandfather, George Rencenvey Morris married the stepdaughter of one of the most radical Yankees in Reynolds County, Hiram Dickson. Hiram was the brother of William Douglas Dickson who I wrote about yesterday. That family got complicated quickly. On the other hand I grew up being with my grandpa Chitwood on a daily basis. You never met anyone more proud and knowledgeable about their southern roots. Now to my most improtant question. Can anyone help me to determine if James Morris of Reynolds County served in any unit on either side? I suspect, going on nothing more than knowing who he associated with, that he was a confederate, but have no proof.
