Yeah I thought of those sources and reviewed the soldiers compiled service records which contain scant information. I guess Grimes and Frost were not at Gratiot at this time while I've been through the St. Louis papers so much in the past 20 years I can't see that I could have missed it. The OR Series II Vol. 6 pg. 981 gives the text of an Inspection done at the Prison and Hospital on Feb. 20, 1864 and introduces Maj. Surgeon Bowman B. Breed, probably to replace Dr. George H. Hood who was in charge at the time of the escape. It does not mention the escape but there is probably a communication somewhere that gives the account. Let me know if anything else turns up. Thanks.
