The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Who Was Dick Bowles in SE MO?

Bruce,

The Civil War in Southeast Missouri does often seem to be a confusing, ill-document affair, with spelling to match. Anyone who gets too hung up on spelling probably should take up stamp collecting. They certainly shouldn't mess with the state adjutant general's database of Civil War soldiers. The Davault family, for instance used to be pretty prominent in Dallas/Marble Hill. (Could still be for all I know.) In the AG's database, it appears that one member of the family that was in a local militia unit had his name rendered as "Davanet," which I believe is a small divan or couch. I have Missouri Civil War participants on both sides of my family. Couldn't find anything about my mother's great-grandfather in Central Missouri, named Germinden, until I realized he was in the records under two other incorrect spellings.
