Richard,

The 1860 Missouri Census of Freedom Township of southeast Lafayette County shows the Anderson Warren family: Anderson age 58 farmer wealthy (real estage worth $24,000/personal worth $17,700) born KY; Sarah I. Warren age 51 born KY: James W. Warren 31, farmer born MO; Thomas B. Warren 21, born MO; Minnie B. Warren 18 born in MO.

Of the six different violent acts or raids in the German-American community in Freedom Township, Dave Poole was instrumental in leading the one on 5 October 1862, 13 July 1863, 23 August 1864, and 10 October 1864, but now I believe Poole was also involved in the 18 September action, too. See below.

HRF's reference to Harry Vougt's centennial history of Concordia is the only source I found that mentions a raid on 18 September 1862. This raid took place about a month after two companies of the new Union 71st Enrolled Missouri Militia Regiment with German-named officers were orgainized on 16 August 1862. I would guess that these two companies (B and C) were from Freedom Township. One of the Company B officers was Henry Frierking, and the 1860 census said a Jermonia Frerking was a head of household in Freedom Township. Also the second lieutenant of Company C was August Brockhoff and the 1860 census shows an August Brockheff as head of household in Freedom Township. This relates to a fight Quantrill had with other units of the 71st EMM near Wellington in northwest Lafayette County on September 17 or 18. It appears that Voigt was referring to this fighting with Quantrill's band when he mentioned two German-Americans killed on September 18. Records of the Wellington fight on September 17 or 18 do not give loss numbers, but the 71st suffered a number of men killed that day in northwest Lafayette County, and perhaps two of them were the Freedom Township men. I don't believe there was a fight in Freedom Township on 18 September, as I believe some of the 71st EMM men from Freedom Township took part in the fight with Quantrill near Wellington, and the reason Voigt mentioned it is that cemetery records of Freedom TWP show that two men died that day.

The Anderson Warren family is listed on page 561 of the 1860 census-taker's book, Brockhoff is listed on page 534, and Frierking is listed on page 529, so the Warrens did not live far from the German-Americans.

The fight on 3 September 1864 was actually "friendly fire" as we call it, or "blue on blue" fire as others refer to it. That day the German-American militiamen fired on another group before they discovered they were shooting on fellow northern forces. That explains why Dave Poole was not involved in that one.
