Scott the OR reference is Vol. XIII, pg 260-261. This is a report of a scout from Salem to Current River, Mo. between Aug. 24-28 1862. A report written by one 2nd Lieut. Herbert Reed, 3rd Mo. Cavalry. Most unusual have a report from such a jr. officer in the OR. This This was no ordinary scout. There is every indication that they had forehand knowledge of the Chiltons before the scout began.

My purpose is to put together a catalogue of Civil War Mills of Missouri. Pictures where possible, drawings of the mills and a biographical history of the mill(s) as well as the owners. Much in the OR's is made of finding such and such person or groups in or near a mill, landing or farm located near by these locations. The OR's usually make reference to a search and seizure people and property or a skirmish occurring at such locations. By having a geographical image of that location as well as a visual picture of the mills along with the who are involved can aide one in grasping what is going on in that particular neighborhood. It is clear that Mills serve as a supply point where both sides can mill their grain, obtain means to supply and maintain forces in the field along with gaining inteligence of the other side. An example I am talking about is a skirmish that occurred near Whaley's Mill and at Bragg's farm September 13, 1862, which I gather is near Bloomfield. I cannot visualize this location on discern its location. I would also like to add that September 13th has a good many skirmishes on record with various MSM and EMM units as seen in their CSR records, yet only one reference can be found in VOL. XIII of the OR's, a report by the well known Col. Samuel H. Melcher, of the Washington County Militia. Dr. Melcher was the medico who brought Gen. Lyons body off the field at Wislon's Creek, later surgeon general of Springfield and Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th MSM Cavalry.
