I don't know if I am beating a dead horse on William Eggleston, but I went back and looked at both the Compiled Servcie Records and the "Memory Rolls" (South Carolina Volunteers in Confederate Service, or SCV) re both Willaim Eggleston and Moses Pearson. Both have conenctions to the 18 MISS.

Thje people who compiled SCV in the 1890's for Company A of the Legion omitted both Pearsona nd Eggleston, so its of absolutely no use whatsoever, not an uncommon occurrence. But I did go back and get the microfilm of both the Legion and 20 S.C. (for Pearson); I do not have access for Mississippi units.

Eggleston ahs only one muster roll on which he is showm for the Legion, since the 1865 rolls are missing. It lists him as Wm Eggleston, Pvt, present on the Nov-Dec 64 roll, with the remark "exchanged for Moses Mearson." What I did not have, and still can't decipher, except for a little bit, is a very poor copy of a document, endorsed by R. M. Sims, who was the AAIG of Gary's Cavalry Brigade, in which the Legion served. His siganture is very clear, but the wording of the endorsement is so indistinct that it cannot be read. The prior endorsement is dated 14 (or 19) Nov 64, by "T. M. Logan, Col Commanding" of the Legion. "approved and Respy Fwd." It deals with something about Eggleston's horse, no other words on the face can be deciphered. The letter of his company commander is so faded that it is totally indecipherable. I suspect that he was approved for a furlough back to Mississippi to obtain a horse, but that is pure speculation. If that is the case, he was probably still hung up in Mississippi or en route back to the command at the time of the surrender. When Gary got to Greensboro in mid-April, after cutting his way out at Appomattox, he found 200 men of his command there, trying to get back to their units, and I have letters of others who were at various stages in the pipeline, getting mounts.
