Re: Champion Hill
In Response To: Re: Champion Hill ()

The Confederates set up a temporary field hospital near the Raymond Road not too far from Major Lockett's temporary bridge over Baker's Creek. This was along the main line of retreat followed by Pemberton's forces to get back across Baker's Creek. When touring with a Blue & Gray Education Association group several years ago, I asked the same question Mark is asking. The response was that they are still there buried on private land which is currently not accessible to the general public. The local "experts" were unwilling to be more specific. This answer applied to both those men killed in battle up near the Jackson Road, and those who subsequently died of wounds in the Confederate field hospital.

Federal Brigadier General McGinnis was detailed to police up the battlefield. By May 20th, he had released on parole all of the seriously wounded Confederates in this field hospital, plus their able bodied attendants. I was not particularly aware of the Federal hospital that William has mentioned, but I suppose that any seriously wounded Confederate who could not be transported following his release on parole would have been of necessity treated in this Federal field hospital. Some of these wounded parolees made their way to Raymond and to Jackson. Confederate burials at these two locations are poorly documented and there are hundreds of Confederates buried in unmarked graves.
