Stan, thanks for your thoughts on weaponry. The biggest buggaboo with action movies has been the abysmall attention to historical detail, with regard to weapons. You get guys like most of us on this site, and the first thing we look for are identyfiyng patches, insignia, etc. If they don't get it right, its spoiled. How many airplane movies from the 1940s have you seen where the models looked really cheesy? Movies that take the extra steps to get it right will ultimately be considered classics.
As for Murphy, he became one of the hightest paid actors in H-wood in the 50s. After surviving what he did in combat, the rigors of adapting to play-acting were not beyond his talents. That book by Don Graham said that he became highly skilled in his craft. I've never seen a Murphy movie that I haven't watched a dozen times.
