Re: Stowing the P1853 Enfield "Tool"

I have an Enfield cartridge box; the one with the buff/white latch strap. I also have the "snake" belt, bayonett frog, and cap box. There is no room for stowage in any of it. (I know that many troops used either US or CS domestic manufactured accoutrement, but many troops issued Enfields were also issued some or all of the British accoutrement. The "enlisted man's" tool is only a little smaller than the NCO tool. It has a nipple wrench and pick, a large screwdriver, a small screwdriver and a ball puller, the "corkscrew" sort, not the screw in. I suspect that the small screwdriver also functions as the cap for an oil vial since it has a gasket where it screws into the body of the tool. That would seem the most minimal set of tools for the weapon.

I agree that the most likely resort with a failed weapon during battle would be to just get another one, it isn't like the PACS lacked for weapons, but at some time, a man would be expected to perform some maintenance on his weapon. Mythology notwithstanding, most Enfields were CSA purchased directly and issued directly to the troops, so I guess the root question is did the tool come with the issued weapon? And, if so, what were you supposed to do with it?
