Re: Stowing the P1853 Enfield "Tool"

Yes, but any "accident" would give you a pretty good jab; lots of sharp edges. I'm thinking the much more formal and better equipped Brits would have assumed the thing would be carried in a knapsack and PACS carriage would be, shall we say, ad hoc. I have the Y version of the private's tool, can't remember who I got it from, but it was a pretty reputable supplier. I think I got the sergeant's tool from the same outfit I got the Enfield accoutrement from. Can't find them anymore, but a few years ago, they were making some nice Enfield stuff. My cartridge box, belt, frog, and cap box are beautifully made and match contemporaneous pictures. I have a gyppo Indian bayonett that I need to replace when I find a good one.

Course, I'm getting too old to run through the woods carrying all that stuff under the hot sun, so I think I'm becoming more of a "collector" than anything else. I can still, By God, button my size 32 uniform pants (barely), so I haven't joined the TBG set yet, though.

The 48th GVIR was issued new Enfield muskets and accoutrement while they were at Grahamsville, SC, in May-June '62, before they went to join Huger for the Seven Days. Lee asked for four regiments from the coastal areas that could stand a hot summer, he was sent two, the 48th and another I can't recall, but the lesser number was "justified" by the fact that they were fully armed and equipped with Enfields. The enlisted men received the 3 band musket and the NCOs the two band musketoon with sword bayonett.
