4,000,000 people-slave are a lot. If just one half of 1% (20,000) had rebelled, or ran away each year the southern legal authorities would have had they hands full. Since we don't have records that such numbers actually ran away that means the opposite is true that 99.5% of the southern slaves stayed on the Plantations.
