My ggf gave each family 40 acres of his plantion and supposely told them not to ever sell it. He couldn't follow his own advice and like a lot or returning vets had to sell it a piece at a time to keep going. My great aunt who was the families first genealogist contacted each family many years ago. They were understandablly not eager to talk about it. They thought she was coming to get the land back. Their stories were very simular to ours. After she assured them she was after research and not land, they told her their stories that had been passed down generation to generation. I have been back about 3 or 4 times, there is less and less of the families and land left with them. The remainer is now a horse farm and the "big house" a has been restored and modernized. The owners now say they have ghosts. My ggf became a politican. Member of State Legislature and Postmaster when he died, a political appointment back then. The best thing I have the privilage of shareing is his 27 letters home starting 28 April 1862 at Camp Goldwaite, AL. Then to Knoxville, Tn. Tarzwell, Rutledge,TN., Silbly Springs on Mobile Bay AL. Blakeley AL. and ending a prisoner at Ships Island MS. I've got to send GP copies of those from Ships Island.
