If one looks at the reality of the thought, it wasn't only slaves who were 'chained', so to speak. Just as many a poor farmer or less than successful merchant, they possibly just accepted their lot in life. Doesn't mean they LIKED it,or they didn't wish for a difference but they lacked the power, knowledge or inner drive to try to change it. Most were smart enough to know that being free was also going to make them responsible for their fortunes. With the lack of support in so many areas, where would they go? How could exist on their own with no real idea of just what they would do?
