Bryan...I have a good friend from motorcycle riding days. Big burley kind of fellow. Hard life, drinking, fighting, riding hard, and always working. Got tired of working for others and went into..........painting. Mostly commercial and industrial not residential. I figured he was just looking for something to get by. His son Dane joined him. A picture of his father. Big tough guy, rugby player. Always looked mad at the world. I figured...just another kid with no ambition. A few days after 9-11 he joined the Army (that Army of One you mentioned). His dad gave him a ration of s***, said "boy, don't you know where they are going to send you?" Dane said yeah and said that he hoped they would. He served 3 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq all together. He had just been promoted to sergeant when on patrol in northern Iraq they were ambushed on three sides by insurgents. He left his vehicle with M4 carbine in hand and went after the threat. All of his men made it out of there. Dane Cauthorne gave the last full measure. He died that day, just a little over a year ago, 9 April 2007. Never underestimate the heart and soul of our youth. Some will surprise you with their enthusiasm and patriotism. Dane Cauthorne was one of those that you would have never thought could "contribute". He did though, with his life. God Bless Dane Cauthorne and his father Billy.
