His father passed away several years ago, and his mother remarried and left the area, so there was no one to tend to that young warrant officer's grave. Even though I didn't really know him that well, that lonely, weedy grave out in the middle of nowhere became kind of symbolic for me. By the way, my brother, who went on to become an army warrant officer pilot and served for 30 years, said that his name is inscribed on a memorial at the Warrant Officer Career Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama.
