The Compiled Service Records were not "sanitized" in any way. The War Department copyists faithfully transcribed verbatim every document which was placed before them. It is true that the documents -- muster rolls, hospital records, prisoner records, quartermaster receipts, etc. -- are not comprehensive, but it was not for lack of trying, or due to come nefarious conspiracy to sanitize the record. The War Department transcribed all the captured Confederate documents in its possession, persuaded the Governors of the southern states to lend their Confederate records, and sent out agents to locate and borrow records from private sources. The compilation of Confederate service records was enthusiastically supported by former Confederates, who actively participated in collecting the records, an effort which continued from 1903 to 1927. In fact, one of the stated purposes of the project was to facilitate the processing of Confederate pension applications. The Adjutant-General's Office used the Compiled Service Records to verify the service of Confederate pensioners, and did so until the 1950's, after which the records were turned over to the National Archives. The entire process was a good-faith effort to accurately preserve the records of Union and Confederate troops. There is absolutely no validity to the claim that they were sanitized or edited in any way.
