Boy, did he ever end up in the dog house! Ironically, in March 1865, just before the evacuation of Richmond, the Confederate Congress finally enacted legislation authorizing the conscription of 300,000 slaves into the Confederate army, but the action came too late, and the Confederate capital was abandoned shortly thereafter. I bet old Pat Cleburne was turning in his grave at the irony of the situation.
