I feel like far more Blacks will be found in state service, as in Louisiana, than would be found in national service. This I feel like would be especially true with the shortage of manpower in the south as the war wore on.

My first exposure to reading about Black Confederates was several decades ago. The writer was commenting on the rush to enlist by southerners in 1861. He was commented about Blacks in Vicksburg, Miss. trying to enlist as news of Mississippi seceeding spread and a call for volunteers went out for enlistments. The Blacks reasoning as to why they wanted to enlist was that they were southerners and the south/Mississippi was their home also.
