As is well known, much of the Confederate army archives were destroyed during the destruction of Richmond on the evacuation of Lee's army.
Major General John Cabel Breckinridge, last Secretary of War " . . . wanted the papers [archives] turned over to the enemy intact, and as a safeguard, Breckinridge gave exactly the same orders to General [Samual] Cooper. The archives, he said, were 'essential to the history of the struggle.'"
