Jamie, you mentioned God's will, in perfect and permissive contexts. What about free will? While God would have us do His will, he leaves the choice up to us. In effect, God was on both sides, and neither. He was with those who tried to follow Him as they understood the path they chose. God, I think, would have wanted peace, but he would not enforce it by exerting His will. Overall, freeing an entire race of people, at least begun with the 13th and 14th Amendments, should be considered in accord with His will, but that does not give the winning side more grace than the losing side.
