The question then arises, "What was the radical Republican's TRUE agenda then?"
It had to have been something larger in it's scope than the mear freedom of the slaves. Was there another motive other than just the freedom of the slaves? Did they hope to form a voter base to secure their political positions and power with the ex-slaves? This was in fact what happen for several years after the war until the disenfranchized southern Democrat voters regained their rights. This use of the ex-slaves as a political power created the deep racial divide in the south that pitted Blacks against White more so than the War ever did.
