March 15, 1861

On this date 150 years ago, in hope of avoiding armed conflict, Seward did not support the reinforcement of Fort Sumter since that move would, he felt, most definitely precipitate a response from the Confederacy. Lincoln, in the midst of varying opinions of his cabinet, delayed any final word concerning the issue in South Carolina.
