"A Northern Party with a pro-Northern Platform. Nothing in it for the South. In fact if the Rev. is started by taxation what you say to an increase of the national tariff to 80% on the dollar? That means the South would be paying .80 cents for each dollar worths of goods imported. They were already putting about 65 - 70 million per year in the the national pocket book. And then Lincoln said that the Federal Forts in the south didn't belong to the South."

Is THAT what you are trying to teach the students????? Where is the slavery issue that the Secession folk were proclaiming in 1860-61?

What is your sources? DiLorenzo, the Kennedy Brothers...folk who are cheerleaders for Southern Lost Cause mythology and proponents of miss-information.

Sorry, if your going to get into the whole Tariff issue, you need more correct info, not what Dilorenzo and the SCV wants you to think. You need to look at what Calhoun, and the S. Carolina speechifiers, and pamphlet writers were actually saying about tariffs way back in the nullification crisis. Even then, no other Southern "Slave" State backed South Carolina on the tariff issue. Heck, Calhoun even helped push the high "Tariff of Abominations" thru to passage. It wasn't about tariffs, it was about nullifying any anti-slave laws that may come up in the future. Even Calhoun said that. Where is all the Tariff talk in the secession documents?

Sorry, but I fear for students getting fed the whole tariff thing causing the war...it was sthe slavery issue, and it WAS a big reason for the war in the Texas mindset.
