Re: Civil War Battle in Maryville TN

Check the Official Record designated The Knoxville Campaign for the battles of the fall of 1863.Not only were there battles in that area in 1863, but in 1864 as well. In the fall of 1864, Andrew Johnson sent General Alvan Gillem to East Tennessee to rid the country of 'guirellas'. Of course he meant John Hunt Morgan and the rest of the Rebels. From August until December 1864 there were fights between the Union and Rebels every day, including the Battle of Bull's Gap, and the Battle of Morristown, and of course John Hunt Morgan was killed in Greeneville. Also battles in Sweetwater, Athens, etc. General's Vaughn and Breckenridge stayed in East Tennessee after Longstreet left the area in the spring of 1864. But Gillem's Army, under command of Stoneman ran them all out by the end of the year. I believe there is a sign posted comemerating the battle at Mossy Creek somewhere near Dandridge, or maybe it is Johnson City. Then of course you had the Battle of Fair Garden over in Sevier County. Longstreet and his army camped at the Harrisburg bridge. LOTS of history in East Tennessee!
