Enemy drove in my scouts and pickets yesterday on Mossy Creek road within
two miles of this place, when I checked them. They are encamped at Panther
Springs, five miles from this place. Strength estimated at 3,500. Shall fall
back if pressed in direction of Bull's Gap, and join Colonel Palmer.

My 10 28 1864 [Friday]

Action at Morristown, My command was stampeded at Morristown this
morning. I lost four pieces of artillery. I lost a good many men in
prisoners. (Vaughn OR V39, I, pp. 851)

The rout of our forces . . . terminated at Russellville. The advance of
the enemy reached Cheek’s Cross-roads, about one mile west of that place. .
