Re: Civil War Battle in Maryville TN

Breckenridge (and other Confederates) succeeded in driving the Union forces back to Knoxville. It was feared that now he would attempt to extend his operations into middle Tennessee. SO...it was time for the Union to call in re-enforcements. Major-General Stoneman communicated to General Schofield a proposal that would curtail the Confederate's ability to further operate in this region. All forces would go by forced march to Saltville to destroy the railroads and salt works. ( Refer to OR 45, part 1, pages 809-814)

Forces from General Burbridge, Gillem, and Ammen were re-organized, and Stoneman took command. Thus began the raid into southeastern Virginia. They began on December 10. On December 13, they defeated Duke's command at Kingsport. They continued on up to Marion, Wytheville, and Saltville, destroying depots, salt mines, rail roads, etc. This little raid costs the Union plenty, but it did do some damage. Of course how much was always up for debate, as it was said the Union exaggerated, and the Confederates downplayed all reports. But I'd say the Union won this round.
