Re: 30th texas (Gurley's regiment)

Doaksville about where the town of Fort Towson OK is now. It was the Capital of the Choctaw Nation in the mid-1800s.

"He [Samual Garland] settled upon lands in the extreme southeastern part of what is today McCurtain County, Oklahoma. His Red River bottom land farm, consisting of some six hundred acres upon which he erected a palatial Southern home, was situated about three miles east of the present inland town of Tom, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. This remained his home until his death." Chronicles of Oklahoma Vol. 20, No. 1, March, 1942, p.15
**

Garland suceeded George Hudson as principal chief of the Choctaw Nation in Oct. 1862 but reliquished his office to his brother-in-law Peter Pitchlyn in 1864.

"Lanesport" was "Laynesport" established by a Mr Layne and was a "port" for steamboats coming up the Red River and also a ferry crossing into Texas.

**
"LAYNESPORT -- Little River Co. -- This former bustling river port and cross roads community was on the north side of the Red River, southwest of Ashdown, and east of the SH 41 crossing of the river." From "Guides to the Ghost Towns of Arkansas" at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~gtusa/usa/ar.htm

Go to http://peace.saumag.edu/swark/htdig/ and search for Laynesport. This is an interesting memoir of southwest Arkansas.

Lanesport does show on USGS maps. Go to http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=15&x=56&y=581&z=15&w=1

Hope this helps. I'm anxious to hear what you find out and more about his letters.
