24th Texas Cavalry burials, Camp Butler, Illinois

Those of you with ancestors who fought in the 24th and 25th Texas Cavalries know that our soldiers were captured at Arkansas Post on January 11, 1863, and sent up the Mississippi River to various Union prisons. The bulk of the men were imprisoned at Camp Butler, Illinois, at Springfield, where many died.

Last August, Gene Schnierle, an Illinois historian and Civil War presenter with a special interest in the 11th Mississippi, took it upon himself to drive to Camp Butler and photograph the grave stones of "my" men of Company B of the 24th, the company I research. In fact, Gene made two trips in order to photograph all of my men, and in so doing, photographed most of those in the 24th and a few in the 25th. If you are interested in seeing photos of the stones of our Texas men who died at Camp Butler, I am posting the URL of the page that I have created.

Please be aware that many errors were made on inscriptions; I have tried to clarify those that I have identified by studying the names and death dates recorded in the Compiled Service Records.

A special thank-you to Gene for his efforts in behalf of Texas families with relatives buried in the cold North.
