If the records mentioned show this man as an officer, I would seriously question any relationship between them and a teenager born in 1845.

Are you certain this young man lived in Texas when the war began?

The War Department compiled the CMSRs from the original muster rolls and other records some years after the war. Information from company muster rolls, regimental returns, descriptive books, hospital rolls, and other records was copied verbatim onto cards. A separate card was prepared each time an individual name appeared in a document.

These cards were all numbered on the back. Card numbers were entered onto the outside jacket containing cards and documents. Numbers on the jacket correspond with the numbers on the cards within the jacket.

Card numbers were used by the War Department only for control purposes while the CMSRs were being created. They don't refer to other records nor are they useful for reference purposes today.

As noted above, anyone can order service files and pension applications through the message board.
