Re: Camp Washington?
In Response To: Camp Washington? ()

John,

The 6th was in Mississippi in late 1863 so I would think Camp Washington may be in Mississippi.

As far as history of the flags of the 6th Texas Cavalry they were presented a stars and bars flag by the ladies of Lancaster Texas on Sept. 7th 1861. This flag was worn out by late spring 1863 so the men of the 6th agreed to retire the banner and send it to Austin. Sul Ross decided the flag should be repaired first so it was sent to Mobile to be repaired and have battle honors sewed on it. Captain Simpson was returning to camp with the flag but stopped to pass the night at a Jackson Mississippi hotel. That night the hotel caught fire and the flag burned in the fire.
Some time after this the women of Richland Mississippi made and presented the 6th with a sky blue silk flag with a cluster of stars in its center.
In Nov. 1863 the regiments of Ross's Brigade received new ANV 12 star flags with battle honors but the 6th did not use theirs regularly the men bore the sky blue banner until the end of the war, it was faded and pale.
At Atlanta the 6th passed by some Georgia solders and they called out : "Thats a mighty pale flag you carry!" The standard bearer replied "Yes! But like the Pale Horse' of the Apocalypse, Hell follows after it!"

I had kin in the 6th also, Company B.

Thanks,
Gary D, Bray
