Re: Camp Washington?
In Response To: Re: Camp Washington? ()

Have not read all these good books, yet, but my daughter gave me "The Darkest Days of the War, The Battles of Iuka and Corinth" by Peter Cozzens. My interest was the 6th's involvement at these battles. The 6th was near by at Pea Ridge and Iuka but failed to get into the battles for various reasons. At Corinth on the second day Col Ras Sterman's Sharpshooter Battalion/Regiment (10 Companies) including I Company of the 6th was on the left of Prices's Army. The rest of the 6th was on their right. When Sterman's unit, the 6th and the rest of Phifer's Brigade found a seam between two separate Yankee Brigades, they almost over ran Gen Rosecarn's headquarters, which was fleeing in front of them. The arrival of two new Divisions to Corinth at this point saved the day for the Yankee's. This caused the Confederate retreat. The next day these two units were the second and third elements to cross the Hatchie (Davis Farm) Bridge when the blocking force almost creamed them. The Sharpshooters and 6th recrossed the bridge under sustained fire and took up positions on the east side of the river, which protected the Confederate withdrawel. The Confederate Army found a site further south on the river, repaired the bridge there and made their escape toward Holley Springs, MS. I hope some of the books you mention have first hand accounts of these battles.

I know I have seen Camp Washington, someplace, but I can not find it in my 6th papers. Will keep looking. My mind is telling me Tennessee, but I do not listen to it often. I had two kin PVTs in B, K and I Companies.
