Re: "Battle of Salisbury Bridge"

Bill, thanks for your response. After posting, I did find "A Brief History of the 2nd Texas Partisan Rangers" (Chisum's Cavalry) by Justin M. Sanders on the web www.rootsweb.com/~txkaufma/civilwar/2txpr.htm. He indicates that that Chisum's Cavalry was in north Louisiana in April 1864. According to the "Red River Campaign: Centennial Commemoration" there were a number of Texas cavalry troops in north Louisiana during April (not including dismounted): 1st Tex, 26th Tex, Terrell's Tex, 4th, 5th, 7th, 13th, 1 & 2 Texas Partisans. This group participated in the Battles at Mansfield & Pleasant Hill. So I'm not sure I understand the distinction you're trying to make.

Thanks for pointing out the attack on Harrison's Brigade.

I'm having trouble finding published newspaper articles announcing the success of the reported Texas cavalry at repulsing the Yanks so salt could continue to be produced. According to written and oral sources salt production at Drake's was the largest in its history since the Confederate army was desperate for salt.

I'm not sure if news of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill some days earlier overshadowed it. Local papers are silent (Alex & Natchitoches taken over by Union; Shreveport no issues from that period). So I'm thinking that the men who lost their lives might have been reported in Texas papers. There are 13 graves marked with metal crosses but no names that I have discovered so far. Will post if I find them. Company "C" was supposed to be from Dallas.

Anyway, I was hoping that this connection might be interesting to you and you might know some sources that I have not been able to find. Marcy Frantom
