I spent weeks working on the Lillys...one of the most fascinating, complex and confusing families in my roster.

LILLY, WILLIAM H. --- Private, Company E, 151st Virginia Militia --- enlisted on 8/21/1861 at Jas. Brammer’s, Mercer County, [West] Virginia. Various possibilities include:
(1) William H. Lilly “Bearwallow Billy” --- 1860 MCC, age 29, farmer, married to Lucinda, age 23. Born on 10/28/1830. He was the son of Robert “Bearwallow Bob” Lilly and Elizabeth Payne Lilly. Married to Lucinda Lilly, daughter of Washington Lilly. Appears on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, Jumping Branch District, age 39, farmer, married to Lucinda, age 33. Enumerated on the 1880 Census of Summers County, West Virginia, Jumping Branch District, age 50, farmer, married to Lucinda, age 44. Appears on the 1900 Summers County Census, Jumping Branch District, age 69, born in October 1830, widower. Died on 3/23/1902.
(2) William Henderson Lilly “One-arm Bill” --- 1860 MCC, age 29, farmer, married to Matilda M., age 29. Son of John “Snakebite” Lilly and Margaret “Peggy” Meadows. Married to Margaret Matilda Harvey in August 1857. Enlisted in Company I, 60th Virginia Infantry on 8/10/1861 in White Sulphur Springs, [West] Virginia. Present until wounded in action at Cloyd’s Mountain on 5/9/1864. Left arm amputated. Discharged on 12/31/1864. Appears on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, Jumping Branch District, age 39, farmer, married to Margaret, age 30. Enumerated on the 1880 Census of Summers County, West Virginia, Jumping Branch District, age 49, farmer, married to Margaret A., age 41. Appears on the 1900 Summers County Census, Jumping Branch District, age 69, born in September 1830, farmer, married to Margaret M., age 60, married for 42 years. Died on 1/12/1913 in Jumping Branch, Summers County, West Virginia.
(3) William H. Lilly “Groundhog Bill” --- 1860 MCC, age 25, farmer, married to Frances, age 25. Born on 12/16/1832. Son of Pleasant Lilly and Delilah Pitman Lilly. Listed on the 1850 Census of Mercer County, West Virginia, age 16, laborer, residing in the household of father, Pleasant Lilly. Married to Frances Melissa Lilly, daughter of Thomas H. Lilly, around 1852. Later married to Julina Frances Ferguson. Appears on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, Plymouth District, age 37, farmer, married to Frances, age 37. Enumerated on the 1880 Census of Summers County, West Virginia, Pipestem District, age 51, farmer, married to Julina F., age 33. Died on 8/29/1909 in Summers County, West Virginia.
(4) William H. Lilly --- Enlisted in Company C, 36th Virginia Infantry on 6/3/1861 in Raleigh County, [West] Virginia, age 31. Deserted on 5/7/1864. Paroled on 12/23/1864, age 33, 5’10” tall, blue eyes, light hair. Appears on the 1890 Veteran’s Schedule of Jumping Branch, Mercer County, West Virginia. Service stated as Company C, 36th Virginia Infantry, from June 1861 to 1865, a period of 3 years and 9 months. [Probably (1) listed above.]
(5) William Henry Lilly “Hickory Bill” --- 1860 Census of Raleigh County, [West] Virginia, Flat Top Neighborhood, age 25, farm laborer, married to Jane, age 26. Born on 4/4/1831 [conflicts with 1900 Census] in Raleigh County. Son of Elijah N. Lilly and Sarah J. Cadle Lilly. Married to Jane Cooper in March 1852. Enlisted on 9/13/1862 in Company B, 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry in Mercer County, [West] Virginia. Transferred to Company G. deserted in October 1862. Per J. L. Scott in 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry: “Born on 4/4/1831. Died on 3/10/1904.” Appears on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, Jumping Branch District, age 39, farmer, married to Jane, age 41. Listed on the 1880 Mercer County Census, Jumping Branch District, age 49, house carpenter, married to Jane, age 51. Married to Rebecca Jane Reed in March 1898. Enumerated on the 1900 Mercer County Census, Jumping Branch District, age 70, farmer, born January 1830, married to Rebecca J., age 59.
(6) William Lilly --- Enlisted in Sweeney’s Company, Swann’s Battalion Virginia Cavalry on 11/1/1864 in Wyoming County, West Virginia. Possibly one of the men listed above
