Virginia, age 29, laborer, married to Mary A., age 27. Enlisted in Company B, 23rd Battalion
Virginia Infantry on 8/5/1861 in Mercer County, [West] Virginia, age 41. Wounded at White
Sulphur Springs in August 1863. Present, as of April 1864. Listed on the 1870 Census of
Mercer County, West Virginia, Jumping Branch Township, age 49, farmer, married to Mary
A., age 49. Enumerated on the 1880 Census of Summers County, West Virginia, Jumping
Branch District, age 60, farming, married to Mary A., age 59. Father of Joseph Floyd Young.
YOUNG, JOSEPH FLOYD --- Private, Company E, listed as Joseph F. Young, enlisted on
8/21/1861 at Jas. Brammer’s, Mercer County, [West] Virginia --- 1860 MCC, age 18,
serving, living in the household of parents, John and Mary A. Young. Enumerated on the
1850 Census of Monroe County, [West] Virginia, age 8, laborer, residing in the household of
Joseph Bradford, age 53, farmer. [John and Mary A. Young were living two dwellings
away.] Enlisted in Company D, 17th Virginia Cavalry on 9/1/1862 in Mercer County, [West]
Virginia. Wounded between September and December 1863. Absent, wounded from
12/31/1863 to 2/28/1864. [His brother, Charles R. Young, also a member of the 17th Virginia
Cavalry, was absent on 12/31/1863 attending him.] Joseph F. Young was retired from
service on 5/15/1864. Paroled at Charleston, West Virginia on 5/8/1865, age 22. According
to family tradition, Joseph F. Young:
"... was answering a call of nature when a Yankee sniper shot him in the head... Due
to his head wound he was blinded in his left eye. After the war he lived in Raleigh
and Summers counties in West Virginia. Joseph was a member of the Missionary
Baptist Church… He died Tuesday, November 5, 1929, at 7:30 o’clock at the age
of 87 years and 12 days old. Joseph F. Young is buried in the family plot Pluto,
West Virginia just outside of Hinton in Summers County, West Virginia."

the 1880 Census in Richmond District, Raleigh County, West Virginia, age 40, farmer,
married to Sarah, age 35. Appears on the 1890 Veterans Schedule, Richmond District,
Raleigh County, West Virginia. Young’s unit and service dates are not stated. [Note: Among
the eight other men listed with Young was Charles Ruble, a veteran of the 1st West Virginia
Cavalry. Ruble had not only survived the Civil War and Andersonville Prison, but also the
explosion of the steamboat Sultana near Memphis, Tennessee in April 1865 – the worst
maritime disaster in American history.] Listed on the 1900 Census of Raleigh County, West
Virginia, Richmond District, age 58, born in October 1841, farmer, married for 33 years,
married to Sarah J., age 54. Enumerated on the 1920 Census of Raleigh County, West
Virginia, Richmond District, age 77, farmer, married to “Sara”, age 72. Lived the last 4½
years of his life with his daughter, Mary Virginia Bennett in Pluto, West Virginia. “He had
been inflicted with old age infirmities and was paralyzed for some time.” Son of John
Young.
