John Calhoun Summers served in the Company B, 59th Virginia Infantry which later became Company A, 60th Virginia Infantry. He enlisted as a private on June 17, 1861 in Lewisburg, [West] Virginia at the age of 22. Later, he was elected company captain but spent the majority of 1861 on sick furlough. Summers was charged with "mutinous conduct" in March 1862 at a General Court Martial. In April he was elected major. In October 1862, as a Lt. Colonel he was "present in arrest". During the first few months of 1863 he was performing recruiting duty in the Monroe County area. He resigned on July 20, 1863. He was paid $283.33 for his service from June to July 20th.
