Here's one from what today is known as Little Washington in Rappahnnock County. Lt. William A. Smith, I/50th Va., was writing to his fiancee, Sunshine -- Ann Electa Utley in Carroll Co., VA. On 11 June 1863, the 50th Va., part of Jones' Brigade, Johnson's division, SEcond Corps, was enroute to Gettysburg.

June 11th. Just as I finished the last sentence the drum beat for us to march, so I had to quit my writing in short order. Marched 10 miles yesterday evening and have made about 15 to day. I am in fine spirits this evening (if I am tired) being so delighted with the country we have passed over to day. O! ‘tis a lovely place, not entirely level, about as hilly as I like, land nearly all cleared and the finest fields of grasses you ever saw, splendid residences and some beautiful ladies. Our route led us through Washington the County Seat of Rappahannock County. It is a very handsome little town and beautiffully situated just East of the Blue Ridge and noted for its pretty girls. But what is worst we had to march right through with out stopping. Think I’ll want to come here to live when the war is over if I don’t get killed. Wouldent Sunshine like to have a home in a pleasant valley just East of the Blue Ridge, where she could look out upon its towering peaks and admire their grandeur? I think she would as she is such an admirer of Nature’s works.
