Tom--here are some comments from Rodes' Division on Shippensburg and its inhabitants:

Captain Joseph Reese, who was one of Doles' Georgians, reported to his hometown newspaper that the town was "not so beautiful, nor the buildings so magnificent as those at Chambersburg." According to Private Pickens from O'Neal's Brigade, it was "a common looking place & inhabited by common looking people." Assistant Surgeon William W. Marston from Iverson's Brigade described the residents in his diary as "a hard looking set I can tell you–mostly Dutch."
