Thank you for providing several references. William Smith's recollection of Little Washington is quite detailed. John Henry Vest of the Second Richmond Howitzers simply called it a "very pretty little town." As for Chambersburg, it was a thoroughly Union town of about 7,000 inhabitants, as reported by soldiers from a couple of dozen different commands. On the other hand, Maryland communities were frequently divided in loyalty.
