Rob,

Thanks for the details from Apperson on the Chambersburg Court House, the seat of Franklin County. William C. Nelson, Ordnance Officer of Posey's Brigade, mentioned that in honor of the County's namesake, a statue of "the old philosopher" was erected on the dome of the Court House. However, George M. Neese of Chew's Battery thought the life-size statue atop the dome represented George Washington. No rebel sentiment was to be found in Chambersburg. One onlooker told the Texans, "Thank God you will never come back here alive." To which John C. West retorted, "No, as we intend to go to Cincinnati by way of New York." The town also boasted a fine hotel, the Franklin, a three story brick affair, which soldier Mosely of the 6th Virginia said would be a credit to any city.
