Rob
Almost by happenstance I discovered the letters of William Alexander Smith, I/50th Va. here: William Adolphus Smith Papers, 1862-1877, Box 2.325/B15, George W. Littlefield Southern History Collection, Southern History Archival Collection, Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin TX.

The collection consists primarily of Smith's letters to his fiancee and wartime bride, Ann Electa Utley (Sunshine), who lived in Carroll Co., Va., and her letters to him.

The title of the collection has gotten his middle name wrong, principally because he signed most of the letters in the collection as either Adolphus (a nickname that he adopted or Ann gave him) or William A. Smith.

The letters ended up in Texas because after he died in 1868, she began identifying herself as Electa Ann Smith, remarried about 1871 (to Joseph Moody Peers), and then moved to Texas, where she died in 1915. She is buried in Oakwood Cem., Fort Worth, TX.

I am in the process of transcribing and editing the letters.

What is your interest in the Smith letters?
