Susan,
Where do you find the information that Adam's Division/Brigade [according to what document you read] returned to Pickensville after first returning to Columbus following the Battle of Sipsey? I haven't seen that bit of info anywhere.
Battle of Romulus is a misnomer, as both Union and Confederates called it the Battle of Sipsey, since more than 90% of the battle occurred in the wilderness along the river over about a 15 mile stretch, ending at Romulus in a final charge.
Also, note that Adams did not "retreat" to Columbus. He left camp near Romulas to intercept a phantom attack on Columbus, which was actually the movement of a detachment of Croxton's Brigade led by Capt. Sutherland. Capt. Sutherland's movements were a ruse to feint an attack on Columbus, and Adams' scouts fell for it.
