I think another question that Mike is asking here is did most CS Cav. generally carry revolvers? (Whether used as mounted infantry or not). It is my contention that most did even if they had to furnish their own. CS troopers had to furnish their own mounts, why not side arms too? If a soldier captured a revolver would he through it away? Turn it over to the Government?
Many individual soldiers in line infantry regiments carried their own side arms until they decided early on that they were more trouble to carry on the march than they were worth. A revolver would have been no impediment to a mounted trooper.
