Re: Mounted Infantry
In Response To: Re: Mounted Infantry ()

I consider the last quote as extraordinary. However, if Captain Miller made this statement it must be accepted at face value. I would still want to review a day-by-day account of the campaign from May through July 1864 to try to evaluate his assertion. These men often faced Federal infantry, and I cannot imagine such combats taking place while mounted. The terrain in north Georgia would also limit opportunities to fight on horseback. The hill country contained numerous small fields and poorly maintained, badly eroded roads and trails, all poorly adapted to large scale mounted service.

The most notable service of this brigade (Anderson's) during this campaign took place during the McCook raid of late July. They were involved in an exhausting pursuit of McCook's command, which was finally brought to bay at Brown's Mill near Newnan. All of the fighting at Brown's Mill took place on foot. The pursuit took several days; the fighting only a few hours, so perhaps that's what Captain Miller had in mind.
