I don't know what Forrest's troops were actually carrying at Ft. Pillow, but the 7th Tennessee Cavalry of Forrest's command was listed on July 3, 1864 as having 541 officers and men present, 478 horses, 45 mules, and were carrying 28 .69 smoothbores, 97 .54 Austrians, 80 .577 Enfields, 25 .58 Springfields, 5 .52 Smiths, 2 .54 Mississippi rifles, 94 .52 Sharps carbines, 4 .56 Colt revolving carbines, 38 .54 Burnside carbines, 26 .50 Maynard carbines, 17 .54 Merrill & Gallager carbines, 19 .52 Hall's & Union Rifles, 70 .44 revolvers, 198 .36 revolvers, no shotguns, and no sabers.
Quite an assortment of weapons, and definitely more carbines and pistols than generally carried by Wheeler's units.....unfortunately ordnance records are scarce in regard to Forrest's command.
