I mis-spoke when I said that this showed that the 8th had carbines. That reference to carbines was to the Texas and Arkansas troops, which it should be noted were fighting from horseback and also using pistols and sabres.
Miller specifically says “...'fought mostly dismounted'. The reverse is true...". Seems to me that he is speaking of direct engagement, but it is open to interpretation.
